Timeline of PussFest
Below is a timeline of MLK trips from over the years. This is reprinted with permission of the PussFest Picayune. This is the best recollection we have of the events.
Here are some highlights of where we went over the years.
Lake Fontana was the site with Dave, Jay, Slim, Ted, Travis, some drifter named Randy, and someone being left out. Very cold and we ate MRE’s from the Army-Navy store in Athens. Cold ass night. It was so cold Dave had to use Ted’s Emergency Blanket.
-1995:The war years interrupted the camping trips.
: Blood Mountain with Dave, Little Ted, and Big Ted. A one nighter.
Great Smoky Mountains with Dave and Slim. On this trip, it was never above 10 degrees.
: Klingman’s Dome with Dave, Jay, Slim, and Ted. Snowed. Great MLK to quote Dave. Jay liked this one too.
: Lake Fontana with Dave, Jay, and Slim. We emerged from the woods to discover the Atlanta Falcons were going to the Super Bowl. Jay thought for sure the world was going to come to an end. It did not since the Falcons blew the game due Eugene Robinson getting arrested for soliciting an undercover cop.
: Jack’s River/Horseshoe Bend Trail with Dave, Jay, and Slim along with Lucy (Dave’s dog). Good trip for a one nighter. Rained and we nearly got wet for not putting the tent fly on securely.
: Cohutta with Dave, Slim, and Jay. One nighter. Dave started a new job and did not have MLK off. Jay had a job interview with the company he still works for that Monday.
: Lake Fontana with Dave, Derek Duke, Jay, Ted, Travis, and Slim. Rained. Rained like hell. Instituted new MLK camping trip of not going camping if it is raining that bad.
: Big Rock Candy Island at Lake Fontana. Dave, Ted, Travis, and Slim. Ted and Travis put a sail on their canoe along with a Jolly Roger flag to become the “Butt Pirates of the Caribbean.”
: Victoria Bryant state park. Event name changed to PussFest by Dave since he could not go due to Margo being born. First MLK Dave ever missed. Good golf trip for Ben, Jay, and Slim. Rained on Saturday so we left on Sunday.
: Vogel State Park and Blood Mountain with Ben, Dave, Jay, and Slim in Ben’s RV. Fun trip.
: George T. Bagby State Park with Ben, Jay, and Slim. 2nd golf tournament. Dave missed this one. Ben sank a 40 foot putt. Also, met the red sweater chick at the club house. Disappointment when we did not get to see her on Sunday. Great golf weekend.
: War Memorial State Park with Ben, Dave, Jay, Ted, and Slim. 2nd annual David A. Griffin Invitational Golf Tournament. Towels were given out along with the first PussFest Picayune. Good time had by all. Slim’s truck defaced with “Rainbow Flag.” Suspects still at large. The golf was some of the worst we had all played. Slim has not picked up his clubs since. The alligators on the course were kind of neat though. It was a drop with no penalty.
: Fort Mountain State Park with Ben, Dave, Jay, and Slim. This tale has not been written yet. Ted could not attend due to scooter accident (see front page).
